Employment Initiatives
The Government aim is to have 80% of the working age population
in employment. Reaching this target will involve reducing
unemployment levels as well as developing the skills of the
existing and future workforce to meet the changing skills
requirements of the labour market.
The NWDA is involved in supporting the region’s inactive
workforce by helping the long-term unemployed return to work
Long-term Unemployed
The NWDA’s main role in supporting the long-term unemployed is
to work with key stakeholders such as Jobcentre Plus to support
their strategies for getting people back to work.
A key role for the NWDA is to influence the activity which is
delivered under a number of high-profile initiatives such as
Pathways to Work and Flexible New Deal to ensure that appropriate
skills training is in place for those who require it. The NWDA is
committed to supporting the Future Jobs Fund which aims to provide
jobs to long-term unemployed people within the Public Sector.
The NWDA is working to influence key public sector partners to
recognise their corporate social responsibility and increase the
uptake in the support they offer to the workless including
Apprenticeships and Local Employment Partnerships. We also have
invested in a regional network of employer support offices for
Offenders in the Northwest.
The NWDA works with five Sub-Regional Partnerships to improve
the employability of the Northwest’s workforce for those who need
additional skills and employment support, such as disabled people
and those who live in deprived areas.
